A recent study confirms that water really is a dieter’s best friend
You’ve heard it so many times. Drink water if you’re trying to lose weight. But does it really help? A study of almost 10,000 people, published in the Annals of Family Medicine earlier this year, confirms that yes, it does! But what if you’re one of those people who just doesn’t enjoy drinking plain water? Here are a few tips for getting, and staying, hydrated:
Give your water a boost. Keep cut up citrus – lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit – in a container in your fridge. Squeeze several slices (don’t be stingy) into ice-cold water every time you pour a glass at home. Not only will it make your water taste better, you’ll get an extra boost of the many healthy benefits of citrus. Not enough flavor? Try water enhancer drops. Available in a variety of flavors, they come in small bottles easy to toss in your purse, and you can add as much or as little flavor as you like. But be sure to check the labels before buying and avoid those packed with sugar and chemicals.
Eat more hydrating foods. Did you know cucumbers are 96.7% water? Strawberries are 91%. And watermelon is called watermelon for good reason. It’s 91.5% water. Many delicious fruits and vegetables have very high water content. Review this list of the top 15 hydrating fruits and vegetables and keep it in mind when picking out produce. And it’s not just produce. Many other foods (and beverages) including tomato sauce, yogurt, soup, milk and coconut water are also high in water content.
Trick yourself. Yes, you read that right. When all else fails, trick yourself into drinking more water! Try adding a little water to every glass of ice tea, lemonade or juice you drink. You’ll barely notice the difference and it will add up throughout the day. If you drink your water through a straw, you’ll consume more liquid much faster, making it easier to drink seconds and thirds. And try starting each morning with a cleansing warm water, lemon and cayenne pepper drink. The combo, with its anti-fungal, immune boosting, and detoxification properties, is fantastic for you and has the added benefit of being another glass of water in your day.
